GNGC launches the Gas Challenge

Ghana National Gas Company launched an initiative on Tuesday, 21st May 2019 

aimed at educating the general public of the operations in the gas industry in Ghana.

The initiative dubbed, “The Gas Challenge” chaired by the Chief Executive Officer Dr Ben K.D. Asante, was launched at the Atuabo Processing Plant in the Western Region.

The Gas Challenge is a quiz competition designed to refine society on the domestic use of gas, the economic opportunities along the gas value chain, health and safety matters related to the use of gas.

Dr Ben K.D Asante, CEO of Ghana Gas, explained that the aim of the contest was to educate the public on the domestic use of gas, the economic opportunities along the gas value chain, and the health and safety matters related to the use of gas. The Gas Challenge would take the form of questions and answers, which will deepen the understanding of people in academia, the media and other stakeholders in the gas sector.

Ms. Augustina Asare Osei, Senior Manager for Government Relations reiterated that the Gas Challenge would not only inform Ghanaians about the gas industry, but also correct any misconceptions about the industry.  

The contestants would be given internship opportunities, among other educative tools like a laptop, tablets etc for the winners of the tertiary edition whiles the stakeholder’s participants would be rewarded with a training program to help build their capacity as well as other prizes as part of the package. 

The maiden edition of the Gas Challenge was held at the British Council on Thursday, 20th June 2019. Eight institutions competed in the contest with the Energy Ministry crowned as champions. They included Ghana’s largest newspaper producing company, the Graphic Communications Group Limited, GBC, GH One TV and the Ministry of Energy, PIAC, the State Enterprises Commission, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) and the Kumasi Institute of Technology and Energy (KITE).  The tertiary edition of the Gas Challenge Competition will come off in October 2019 and will be between tertiary institutions that offer oil and gas related programs.
